Review: In Search of Sam (Truths I Learned from Sam #2) by Kristin Butcher (YA)

Book Blurb

Raised by her mother, eighteen-year-old Dani Lancaster only had six weeks to get to know her father, Sam, before he lost his battle with cancer. It was long enough to love him, but not long enough to get to know him especially since Sam didn't even know himself.

Left on the doorstep of an elderly couple when he was just days old, and raised in a series of foster homes, Sam had no idea who his parents were or why they had abandoned him. Dani is determined to find out. With nothing more than an address book, an old letter, and a half-heart pendant to guide her, she heads into B.C.'s Interior to Kamloops, Barriere, Merritt, and finally to a small, forgotten town teeming with secrets and hopefully answers.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Dani Lancaster lost her father, Sam, four months ago. She is still reeling from it. She only knew her father for six weeks. She received the shock of learning who he really was and then lost him forever. He left her his truck and his trailer.

She talks her mother into letting her go find out what there is to see with his things. He left her some money and personal items. She knows the story that he was left on the doorstep of an older couple when he was born. He went into foster care when he was five. However that’s all she really knows about his childhood. Looking at what he left her, she is determined to find out more. She needs to. She is struggling with who she thinks she is.

Her road trip leads her on a path of discovery. She finds people who knew Sam and share stories about him. She starts gaining confidence and learning more about herself. Once she gets to Farrow, the town Sam came from, she learns more than she ever thought she would. Her trip comes full circle.

This book was an emotional journey for the main character. She loses her father after only knowing him a short time. The reader accompanies Dani as she strikes out to learn more about Sam and herself. This is the first time she has done anything like this on her own and you watch her grow as she learns more. The characters she encounters are interesting. She seems to make friends as she goes along and her father’s friends help with what they can.

I like how she comes up with the ideas to save Farrow. Small towns at its best include the people who live there. At the end of the book she learns what she set out to do and the secret wasn’t what I expected. It was almost a letdown to be honest. It had been built up so much throughout the story that once it was revealed I thought “that’s it?” It was an interesting book with an okay storyline. I give it a 3 out of 5.
