Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Meara’s life is being turned upside down. Her mom’s cancer is back and has spread. Things don’t look good. In fact that has prompted her mother to move them to Canada so she can get to know her grandparents. Meara is leaving behind all her friends and what she knows right before her senior year.

Her new life is now filled with taking her mother to the doctor, her grandparents, her new friend Katie and her boyfriend Evan. She is settling in pretty well except for the dreams she is having of a strange man. She knows he is David, her father, but how can she when she has never seen a picture of him. When she mentions it to her mom, her mom acts strange and lies to her. Something isn’t right. Everyone seems to have answers but no one will tell her what is going on.

When her father shows up in person, Meara doesn’t know what to think. Something strange is definitely going on. She also keeps seeing this unknown boy around her friend Ula and at school. He seems to be following her which makes things even weirder. When Meara finally learns the truth, it isn’t from her father, but from her friend Ula. Ula reveals more than a shocking secret. Meara becomes scared when she meets the mystery boy one night out with the girls and she can’t stop her actions. She is not sure she can protect herself from the influence that occurs.

When her mother’s cancer grows and her health fails, Meara has to let go and decide if she will remain with Evan or go with her father and explore the other half of herself.

This book was a sad journey from the beginning. Meara had to deal with her mother’s illness again and move to another country to meet her grandparents. She was sad and torn but came across as a strong teenage girl. I liked her instantly. I felt for her from the beginning. The author put Meara in situations where she tried to do the right thing.

The story about her father was interesting. I truly don’t know how she handled the whole way her life changed. It almost seemed like it was too much; her mother’s cancer, her father’s secret and her ultimate choice in the end. The last part of the book was sad. I honestly didn’t like how it ended. I was hoping there would be an epilogue showing how things worked out. It was an interesting storyline. It did bring on the tears, so beware of that. I give it a 3 out of 5.
