ARC Review: Most Likely to Succeed (Superlatives #3) by Jennifer Echols (YA)

Book Blurb

In this sexy conclusion to The Superlatives trilogy from Endless Summer author Jennifer Echols, Sawyer and Kaye might just be perfect for each other—if only they could admit it.

As vice president of Student Council, Kaye knows the importance of keeping order. Not only in school, but in her personal life. Which is why she and her boyfriend, Aidan, already have their lives mapped out: attend Columbia University together, pursue banking careers, and eventually get married. Everything Kaye has accomplished in high school—student government, cheerleading, stellar grades—has been in preparation for that future.

To his entire class, Sawyer is an irreverent bad boy. His antics on the field as school mascot and his love of partying have earned him total slacker status. But while he and Kaye appear to be opposites on every level, fate—and their friends—keep conspiring to throw them together. Perhaps the seniors see the simmering attraction Kaye and Sawyer are unwilling to acknowledge to themselves…

As the year unfolds, Kaye begins to realize her ideal life is not what she thought. And Sawyer decides it’s finally time to let down the facade and show everyone who he really is. Is a relationship between them most likely to succeed—or will it be their favorite mistake?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Kaye is the vice president of the student council, head cheerleader and plans to go to Columbia in the fall. She has had her future planned out for ever including dating and marrying Aidan. Lately she has been questioning things. She doesn’t like the competition that happens with Aidan or the way her treats her. The Homecoming dance becomes a thing of contention. In fact he informs her that they should take a break. She is so angry and frustrated with him and then her mother tries to guilt her about the decisions she is making. Kaye is about to explode from the pressure and stress. The only person who seems to be there is Sawyer. He is always flirting with her during the games while dressed as the mascot. She secretly had a crush on him but he hadn’t fit into her plans. Now everything is changing and he seems to be interested in her as well. She puts herself out there.

Unfortunately Sawyer fears he will get hurt and Kaye’s mom refuses to let her date him because of his father. Things may be over before they even start.

I love this series. I’ve read other book from this series and loved the characters. It is an entertaining series centered around seniors voted for most likely…. It is interesting to see how these titles are taken so seriously and affect their lives. Kaye thought she was voted most likely to succeed with Aidan. The truth, however, was not the case. It throws her off and she really feels what she thought was her perfect life wasn’t.

This story also took a look at complex family relationships and expectations. Kaye’s mother demanded a lot from Kaye. So much so that Kaye wasn’t happy. She started questioning everything and rebelling a bit. True teenage angst, but she and Sawyer had good reason to be angry. I liked how the author had both characters seek out counseling. There is such a stigma with it that those who need it don’t go. No one should be ashamed to ask for help.

Sawyer and Kaye’s relationship was sweet but their baggage kept getting in the way. Kaye kept saying things that set Sawyer off and she wouldn’t know why. It was a great journey for self-discovery. Both characters had to figure out what made them happy and whether it was worth the fight. I give it a 4 out of 5.
