Free Book & Review: Stained (Stained #1) by Ella James (YA/UF)

Book Blurb

Seventeen-year-old Julia is finally living the good life. She's traded a hard cot in a Memphis orphanage for her very own room in a perfect little house, on a perfect little street, with a perfect set of parents who picked her to be their daughter.

But Julia is hiding a secret - and one fall night, she returns home from a friend's house to find that her secret has found her. Her 'forever home' is ashes. Her parents are dead. And, in the sky above the flames, a winged creature hunts her.

The Nephilim King, Samyaza, has taken everything from Cayne. After struggling in the darkness for years to piece together his shattered life, Cayne is finally ready to confront his past and avenge the loss of everything he loved. He tracks Samyaza to a Memphis warehouse, where he winds up flat on his back, in the healing hands of a beautiful, dark-haired girl he doesn't need to know.

Unbeknownst to either of them, they are already bound. Cayne's past holds the answers to Julia's future. But what will pose the greatest threat to her? The bounty placed on her head by the leaders of two Celestial realms, or giving her heart to a man who is bound, by birth, to break it?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Julia’s parents die when her house burns and is squeezed to rubble by strange orange talons that belong to a black winged, dark-skinned man. She runs and hides out in an old pecan factory. She refuses to go back into the foster care system. She hopes after the fire that they think she is dead. She doesn’t know what she will do next, but right now she seems safe, until a strange man falls through the roof of the factory.

He is hurt and she is drawn to heal him. She uses her powers which she has kept secret to help him. As he comes to and gets up the strange creature that destroyed her house comes flying through the hole in the ceiling. The strange man gets in between the creature and Julia. It seems that they have a common enemy.

Cayne has been searching out Samyaza to kill him. He has taken something from Cayne. Unfortunately his memory is missing. Now he is saddled with this strange girl. He decides to use her as bait to lure Samyaza out. They travel across the country following him. They follow the death and destruction that Samyaza leaves. Julia has a mysterious birthmark that the ones left dead share. Something strange is going on and Julia seems to be in the middle of it without knowing what it is. Cayne seems to be protecting her as their relationship evolves.

This book had an interesting storyline. Julia was obviously special in some way by her healing abilities. Unfortunately she had no idea how she did it or who she really was. Cayne just kind of dropped into her life, literally. I liked how they teamed up to go after Samyaza.

However Cayne kept too many secrets and it made the book confusing in spots. There were a lot of unanswered questions throughout. Julia’s character also came across as very young or just immature. Most foster children seem to come across as tough or with a chip on their shoulder. So her naivety was a bit surprising. There was also a little frustration for me as some of the other characters in the book didn’t seem to fit because of the secrets kept. There is obviously more going on but never revealed. I give this book a 3 out of 5.
