Review: The Secrets of Attraction by Robin Constantine (YA)

Book Blurb

Set in the same world as The Promise of Amazing, this smart, surprising, and romantic follow-up to Robin Constantine's debut novel follows two New Jersey teens as they become friends and fall in love. Perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins, Sarah Mlynowski, and Jennifer E. Smith.

Madison Pryce thinks she's got everything figured out—she's working on a portfolio for a summer art program and hanging with her friends. Plus she has her hot boyfriend, Zach. But then a visit from a family friend turns Maddie's life upside down.

Jesse McMann is still reeling from a breakup that shattered his heart and his band. Then pride (and some goading from his bass player and fellow barista) forces him to find a new drummer—and the inspiration to write music again.

Kismet arrives in the unlikely form of Grayson Barrett, who tries out for Jesse's band, and whose girlfriend is BFFs with the cute girl who orders a chai latte after yoga every Thursday: Maddie. What Jesse and Maddie thought they knew about the secrets of attraction and the rules of romance changes once they start falling for each other.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Madison Pryor and her mother have always been a team. It has always been just the two of them. In fact her mom talked her into going to yoga so they could do it together. So Madison and her friend Wren find themselves watching the ‘hot yogi’ named Leif. Things seem to be going great until she meets Jesse at Mugshot, the coffee shop next to her Yoga class.

It shouldn’t mean anything since she is dating Zach, but Jesse is fascinating and gives her an electric feeling. She sees him at her school dance and helps him sneak in. She becomes confused because Zach is easy and she is in complete control. She has no clue when it comes to Jesse.

However everything is thrown for a loop when Madison’s mom drops the biggest bomb on her. Since her mom is becoming a yoga instructor, she decides to lead a truthful life. Madison’s life changes forever. She is reeling from the news and her growing feelings for Jesse. She has no idea how to handle anything.

I read the first book in this series about Wren and Grayson. I loved the pairing of those two. Next was this book about Madison and Jesse. Madison is a more complex character than she originally comes across as. I liked her independence and the goals she has. I even liked how the author gave her doubts, jealousy and insecurities. It made her human, relatable and believable.

Jesse was sweet and thoughtful. I like his character and how he approached everything he did. His broken heart was realistic in the beginning. The reader feels bad for him. You want them to get together and mean something. This was a fun read full of great characters with interesting surprises. I give it a 4 out of 5.
