Review: Descendant (Descendant #1) by Nichole Giles (YA/PNR)

Book Blurb

Seventeen-year-old Abigail Johnson is Gifted.

Blessed—or cursed—with Sight and Healing, Abby lives an unsettled life, moving from place to place and staying one step ahead of the darkness that hunts her. When she arrives in Jackson, Wyoming, she is desperate to maintain the illusion of normalcy, but she is plagued with visions of past lives mixed with frightening glimpses of her future. Then she meets Kye, a mysterious boy who seems so achingly familiar that Abby is drawn to him like he’s a missing piece of her own soul.

Before Abby can discover the reason for her feelings toward Kye, the darkness catches up to her and she is forced to flee again. But this time she’s not just running. She is fighting back with Kye at her side, and it’s not just Abby’s life at stake.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Abby lives in Las Vegas at the moment with her Gram and her mom. One night when Abby is out with friends she catches this strange man watching her. Then she immediately has a vision that makes her physically sick. She calls her mom to come get her and take her home. The man has vanished. When they approach home Abby knows something is wrong. They find her Gram on the kitchen floor and the apartment torn apart. Abby tries to heal her Gram but is unable to do so. She loses her greatest teacher.

Abby and her mom move to Wyoming, knowing they are no longer safe. Abby starts high school at Jackson, meeting new people and tries to be normal. Jen and Rose are two girls she meets and become her first friends. Kye is a mysterious boy that that gets her attention. She is drawn to him and eventually learns he also has gifts. She is then thrust into a world of other creatures; fairies, sprites, mermaids, and the Elen. She has inherited the powerful ring of the Princess. She clearly has ties to Princess Raina whose ring it originally was. This ring is extremely important and she must keep it at all costs.

Tynan, leader of the Dark Elen and a demon army is waiting to be released from his prison. Abby and Kye are in a race to find the keys that open the sealed doors. A curse placed upon them determines their fate as betrayal sets the catalyst in motion. Abby has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

This was a great book. It was action packed and full of suspense. Kye and Abby are chased in multiple cities. Both cling to each other as they are pulled into war that occurred many lifetimes ago.

I felt for Abby immediately. She lost her grandmother in the beginning of the story. She is completely reeling from that, then she is dropped in the middle of this new world and fight she knows nothing about. You share her confusion as she is forced into this unknown world. She has to draw from her gifts, her strength and her love to live through everything.

It’s a great YA story that will keep your attention with everything the author throws at you. The characters are great and likable. The love story is epic and centuries old. I can’t wait to read the next book to see what happens next. I give it a 4 out of 5.
