ARC Review: Emmy & Oliver by Robin Benway

Book Blurb

Emmy’s best friend, Oliver, reappears after being kidnapped by his father ten years ago. Emmy hopes to pick up their relationship right where it left off. Are they destined to be together? Or has fate irreparably driven them apart?

Emmy just wants to be in charge of her own life.

She wants to stay out late, surf her favorite beach—go anywhere without her parents’ relentless worrying. But Emmy’s parents can’t seem to let her grow up—not since the day Oliver disappeared.

Oliver needs a moment to figure out his heart.

He’d thought, all these years, that his dad was the good guy. He never knew that it was his father who kidnapped him and kept him on the run. Discovering it, and finding himself returned to his old hometown, all at once, has his heart racing and his thoughts swirling.

Emmy and Oliver were going to be best friends forever, or maybe even more, before their futures were ripped apart. In Emmy’s soul, despite the space and time between them, their connection has never been severed. But is their story still written in the stars? Or are their hearts like the pieces of two different puzzles—impossible to fit together?

Readers who love Sarah Dessen will tear through these pages with hearts in throats as Emmy and Oliver struggle to face the messy, confusing consequences of Oliver’s father’s crime. Full of romance, coming-of-age emotion, and heartache, these two equally compelling characters create an unforgettable story.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Emmy and Oliver were great friends. They shared the same birthday and lived next door to each other. Then one day Oliver’s dad picked him up from school and they vanished. No one knew where they had gone.

Ten years later there is still no sign of them. Oliver’s mom still lives next door and Oliver’s room is exactly the same. Emmy remembers that day and even dreams about it. She wonders a lot about him. Surprisingly one day he is found in New York and brought home. Life changes again.

Emmy doesn’t know what to expect. She is afraid of what she will find. Oliver is taller but his face and eyes are his. She was afraid she wouldn’t recognize him. Ten years is a long time.

Oliver becomes her friend again and she realizes how affected he is from the kidnapping. She becomes his lifeline. When all her secrets come out that she has been hiding from her parents and Oliver’s dad comes back to town, things become unstable. Emmy has to decide what her next step is.

I really liked this book. It was fascinating how the author focused on those left behind when a child is kidnapped. You never really think how far out the effect reaches. Small children even feel the aftermath as it ripples outward. Emmy, Caro and Drew were prime examples of that.

Then when he came back no one really knew how to handle the situation. He was a different person, they were all different. They couldn’t pick up where they left off. I liked how the author put that struggle up front and center of the story. The adjustment for everyone involved was the story. I give it a 5 out of 5. I couldn’t put it down.
