Series Review: Stage Dive Series by Kylie Scott

Book Blurb

Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this.

Evelyn Thomas’s plans for celebrating her twenty-first birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure as hell never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

One thing is for certain, being married to rock and roll’s favourite son is sure to be a wild ride.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Evelyn has turned twenty-one and takes a trip to Vegas with roommate Lauren to celebrate. Ev had a night of tequila shots and more. Unfortunately she doesn’t remember. She wakes up in her hotel room in the bathroom with a massive hangover and a strange guy in the room with her. He is David, guitarist in the famous band Stage Dive, and he is her new husband. Ev is in shock and in panic. This is not part of her grand plan for her life. She is the good child, her brother is the bad boy. David is concerned and angry that she doesn’t remember anything. He storms off after they decide that it was a mistake, leaving her in her shocked state. She wants to just forget it ever happened. Denial is a wonderful thing, until she lands in the Portland airport with the paparazzi chasing her. Her secret comes out and everyone knows. The paparazzi camps out on her parents’ front door and she has no where to hide. David sends his security team to the rescue and whisks her away to LA.

She enters his world of rock and roll. Immediately she realizes that she doesn’t belong and it appears that David doesn’t want her there. She is there to sign annulment papers. When they are presented to her, she refuses to sign them. She doesn’t want any of David’s pay off money. She escapes with band drummer Mal. He keeps her hidden until David arrives. David decides to take her somewhere else while they wait for new papers to be drawn up. Alone, they get to know each other and what happened that night in Vegas. They have to decide to continue being married or part ways. They are from different worlds and it appears neither belongs in the other.

I absolutely loved this book. The characters were complex and came with their own issues. The plot was intriguing. It makes the reader ask themselves ‘what would I do in this situation?’. It was fun for me to watch the story unfold and the characters develop. The author portrayed the world of the famous in a more realistic light then some people see. I loved how she took a ‘normal’ person and placed them into that environment. It was fascinating to watch the interactions and hostility that was aimed at Evelyn since she was the outsider. I look forward to more books about this band. I give it 5 out of 5.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

When Anne gets home after a long day and notices that her apartment is empty, she is shocked. Her roommate bailed on her an no she doesn’t know how she is going to pay her rent. She just wants to sink into her hole of self pity. Her neighbor Lauren refuses to let her and talks Anne into going to a party with her and Nate. Nate is Lauren’s boyfriend. His sister just happens to be married to the guitarist of Stage Dive. Nothing like a party thrown by rock stars to make you forget all your troubles.

Anne has always been a fan of the band especially the drummer Malcolm Ericson. So when she comes face to face with him at the party, she is not able to have a cohesive thought. He is entertaining and fun even a bit crazy. Her worries are forgotten for a while as he teases her.

Then the next day she is shocked to come home from work to find Malcolm in her apartment. He has moved himself in and paid her rent. He wants her to pose as his fake girlfriend. They come to an agreement and she decides that she likes having him around. They try to stay within the boundaries they agreed to. Of course Mal continuously walks all over them and Anne has to keep her wits when around him.

They are both hiding important information from each other. Anne refuses to talk about her mother and Mal refuses to allude to what is bothering him when he is sad causing him to pull away. Their agreement changes and their relationship turns into a whirlwind. Malcolm’s mood swings and Anne’s fears get in the way.

The author has created a great cast of characters. Being a famous rock band adds an interesting dynamic. It is a foreign world to me and I find it fascinating. The world they live in affects how the characters react and what they do. Anne is so funny in how star struck she is with Malcolm. She can’t even talk. He comes across as a bit crazy. He is silly and outrageous throughout the story. Anne is a good match for him. She keeps him a bit reigned in but lets him be himself. He, on the other hand, forces fun into her life. Their interactions with each other were funny and sweet. Their fights could be intense being driven by their fears.

The issues the author threw at them were enough to mess with their heads. I felt sorry for Mal and the band. The loss was devastating for all of them. Anne and Mal seemed to heal each other which made me root for them even more. After reading Lick, I couldn’t wait to see what the band was up to again. David and Ev are ever present in this book which I’m glad to see. I am now ready to continue the journey with Lead. Play gets a 4 out of 5.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Jimmy Ferris is the lead singer for the rock band Stage Dive. He has been fighting his demons for years and has been sober for six months. Lena was hired to be his sobriety companion. She has been taking her job very seriously. All the others who were hired either were fired or driven off by Jimmy. Lena knows her days are probably numbered.

When fellow band member Mal’s mother died, things changed. Jimmy loved Lori. She made sure he was fed when he was younger and took care of him and David. Jimmy is devastated by her death. His otherwise repressed emotions spilled out all over Lena. Her heart softens toward him. She sees a glimpse of his heart which hides behind the walls he has built up.

She tries to suppress her own feelings for Jimmy. Once she knew it was no use, she starts looking for a replacement. Jimmy couldn’t handle her feelings so she kept them hidden. In fact Jimmy encourages her to date to get over her “crush” as he put it. She tries things his way and keeps her feelings to herself.

It didn’t work as she knew it wouldn’t. Jimmy kept acting weird and her feelings for him were deep. She knew this wouldn’t end well.

This is the third book in the Stage Dive series. I love these books. The characters are awesome. This is an outstanding addition to the series. Jimmy is messed up. He is newly sober and broken thanks to his mother. His baggage is extensive.

Lena is sassy and I absolutely love her. She has been my favorite female character in the series so far. I felt bad for her, knowing how she felt and why she stayed. She puts Jimmy’s needs ahead of her own. She is definitely someone you want on your side. She hung in longer than I would have that’s for sure. It’s hard to stay in a place where you would never be wanted the way you deserve. Her strength is ever present. Her relationship with Jimmy is complex and intense. The love scenes were hot and the arguments were full of heat and emotion. This was a great read. I give it a 5 out of 5.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Ben Nicholson is the bass player for the band Stage Dive. He is the last remaining member who is single and definitely hopes to remain that way.

Lizzy is Anne’s younger sister. Anne is married to the drummer, Malcolm Ericson. Lizzy saw Ben at a band rehearsal and it was an obsession at first sight. She had to have him. Ev gave up his phone number and Lizzy chased after him, texting him. Unfortunately Mal threatened Ben and Lizzy became off limits.

Ben was attracted to her but tried to keep her in the friend zone. She was too persistent, however. As a result she is shocked to see a positive pregnancy test. Her life just got complicated quickly. The way Ben treated her after their time together caused her to avoid him from then on. She wanted to move on, then surprise.

When Ben and the others find out chaos and anger reign. Mal wanted to kill him. Ben was beside himself and didn’t know what to do. Tension spreads throughout the band. Things get worse when Ben wants to just be friends with Lizzy while co-parenting. He doesn’t want any type of romantic relationship. Lizzy knows it’s going to be just her and the baby once it’s born.

These books are awesome in this series. I love reading about these love-scared rock stars finding their matches. Deep is an excellent addition to the series. We met Lizzy first in the book Play. She was accepted into the band family.

Her chase of Ben was entertaining to read. He didn’t stand a chance against her. He tried but her determination was greater. She was an excellent character. I did want to smack Ben a couple of times. I couldn’t believe how he approached his relationship with Lizzy. The author created such a big, strong character who was scared of love. This, of course, is the theme of the books in the series. The only one who was different was Malcolm.

The pregnancy was the different dynamic in this story. It created a whole new set of problems the characters had to face. It made it possible for the author to slip in lots of humor. I laughed out loud at certain parts of the story. Awesome read and I give it a 5 out of 5.
