Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
Book 1 - A Job From Hell
When they attempt the theft things don’t go as planned. Amber ends up in the shack and she happens to find a scroll with a bizarre verse and a few gems. Nothing that Dallas alluded there would be. She grabs what see finds and flees the shack. She almost gets caught by a man with a whip of fire.
After that night she sees Aidan more often and meets his brother and friends. She is drawn to him but feels guilty because of her boyfriend Cameron. When Cassandra reveals everyone’s secrets, Amber is shocked. She has accidentally found herself stuck in the middle of a paranormal world. She has received the gift of sight for ghosts and everyone now wants her. She has no clue what she is doing.
She has to make a deal with the shadows to save Aidan. Aidan, Kieran and company have to rescue her from the shadows. Aidan explains that he needs her to go after a book of spells. Amber is confused. She believes that Aidan only wants her for the book. It’s only when Layla attacks her that she believes he really wants her. Now they are partnering up with the shadows to go after the book. Amber has to go to the borders of death to find the location. Of course nothing is ever easy.
The paranormal world the author created was fascinating to me. I liked how the storyline began and evolved. Amber was hired by Aidan as a housekeeper. Turns out he is more than she thought. She also gets pulled into his world accidentally thanks to her brother. This girl has such horrible luck.
The decisions she makes are ridiculous at times. I really got to the point where I didn’t like her. She constantly got on my nerves. When her youth and immaturity showed through, I almost stopped reading the story. If I don’t like the characters it makes it difficult to read the story. She was my least favorite of the bunch. The rest of the characters I liked. They were hilarious. Kieran was a clown and Cass gave it right back to him. Their bickering was one of the highlights of the story. The ending was ok, a little confusing. I hope the next book is better. I give this one a 3 out of 5.
Book 2 - Doomed
Cass met him a few months ago when he dropped by to see Amber. There seemed to be an instant connection between the two. The day he kept calling her work he waited outside of her work and then followed her home. He apologized to her for his rudeness and then asked her out. She began feeling weird. Almost like she had the flu. She is shocked when Dallas feels that way too. It is a part of the bond that they have with each other. He is her one.
When her dad calls her back to Hell for a job, she asks Dallas to come along. However she can’t tell him where they are really going and who her father really is. The lies start stacking up.
When Aidan and Amber arrive, things get even more complicated. Cass is constantly hiding who she really is from Dallas and trying to get out of her curse when she turns eighteen. Apparently dear ole dad didn’t tell her all the wonderful things that await her.
When enemies who were once friends attack and threaten Dallas, Cass has to embrace her darker side to save him.
This is the second book in the Ancient Legends Series. This is also Cass and Dallas’ story. I was hoping for more if the truth be known. Cass is so busy juggling her lies that I got bored. I wonder if she told the truth sooner if things would have happened differently. I’m surprised if she knew whether she was coming or going.
I was hoping to see more of the characters from the first book. Aidan and Amber showed up but not a lot of interaction with them together, just Amber alone. I see she hasn’t changed that much since the first book. She still remains my least favorite character.
However I do like Cass and her personality. I guess being the daughter of Lucifer causes trust issues. The storyline was as interesting in this book as the first. I like how the author portrays Hell and the type of place it is. I mostly like what the author produced for the reader. It did occasionally drag in places and I would begin skimming over those scenes. I also think there was way too much going on in this story. I wish Dallas and Cass could have had more intimate time together. Their bond was important but there wasn’t much connecting going on. They needed more time alone together. When they did it turned weird. I am still holding out for a better book next time. I give this a 3 out of 5.
Book 3 - Voodoo Kiss
Once in Rio at the airport Sophia sees the most beautiful man in the crowd. She feels guilty for thinking that with Gael by her side. She is determined to focus on Gael. He takes her to get a psychic reading done but something strange occurs and a blackness overtakes her. Gael’s behavior gets stranger and the man she saw at the airport appears.
She leaves Rio with Thrain and Cass. They have been looking for her. They reveal who she really is and what her powers can do. The bond she finds she shares with Thrain takes away her fear. Her repressed memories are flooding her head. She is determined to help Cass bring back Dallas in order to save them both. The only thing she asks is a chance to see her sister Theo.
Unfortunately Gael’s intentions were never noble and his plans get in the way. He is determined to follow his own agenda in order to use Sophia’s powers for himself. Nothing is what it seems.
This is the third book in the Ancient Legends Series. As I’ve said before I like the storyline of this series. The world and characters that the author created have been interesting. I liked both main characters in this book. What Sophia was and what she could do was very intriguing.
I felt, however, that the author could have done a lot more with this story, even the whole series. The story could have gone deeper. It feels as though it skims along the surface for me. I also felt that Sophia accepted things too easily. The author had an abundant amount of emotions she could have explored. The situations could have been more also. My problem is I want more with the stories. I give this one a 3 out of 5.
Book 4 - Dead and Beyond
Amber decides she has to do what she needs to do. Aidan isn’t going to help her. She needs to plan for finding Angel and find out what is really going on.
The storyline in this book as in the others of this series is interesting. I like the direction the author is taking it. However I still can’t stand Amber. She isn’t getting any better as the series progresses. For someone who is new to the paranormal world, she is incredibly stubborn and insists on doing stupid things. Her impatience and impulsiveness will lead her into trouble every time.
I almost stopped reading this book because of her. I really want her to grow up. Her tantrums are childish and it drives me crazy. The only things saving this book is the storyline. However I do want to see what happens next. I give this book a 3 out of 5.
Book 5 - Forever and Beyond
The vampires are outsiders and the witches don’t trust them. Now that girls are being found dead, old grievances are coming out. The war is almost a reality. Amber finds herself in the middle of more secrets and trouble.
This is book five in the Ancient Legends Series. And it’s official, I can’t stand the main character Amber. I have lost all hope for her getting any better. She is the heroine but I refuse to put her in that role. She acts immature, impulsively and never listens. I had to make myself read this book. The only reason I continue with this story is I like the storyline. However if I don’t like the main character it is very difficult to get into the book. Basically this was a journey to see how Amber messes things up and refuses to have confidence in herself. I don’t like incompetent, unsure female leads. I give this book a 2 out of 5.
Book 6 - Shadow Blood
In book six Amber, Aidan and Kieran are still in Morganefaire. The council is blaming them for the deaths of more girls. Amber isn’t sure who is behind it so she and Julie, her ghost companion, are investigating. Amber believes Maya is possessed by Rebecca so she follows her. Amber gets into a bit of trouble like always but is saved by a member of Aidan’s brethren. While she was gone someone broke into their rooms and stabbed Aidan. The knife used had Shadow blood on it and is slowly poisoning Aidan. Amber can’t trust anyone. The witches are partnering up with the werewolves. Seth has an ulterior motive and she can’t trust him. She is running out of time and things are getting more dangerous. The mystery circles Amber as she tries to reason out what is really going on and who is really behind it. When it all comes out Amber isn’t surprised but she is unable to change the outcome.
This book had so much going on that it got a little confusing. At times I was unsure as to what was really going on. The reader would get hit with things quickly and then the story would move on. I could not process that fast at times, especially if it was a very unexpected move.
I did like Amber’s character a little more in this book. In previous books she had been my least favorite one. She had to step up and do what needed to be done. Julie seemed to take up the immature female character for a while at least. In the end I liked both of them better. They worked well as a team.
The ending surprised me a bit. I didn’t see that coming. So kudos to the author for that surprise. Nothing like being played. It will be interesting to see how Amber gets herself out of the situation. This book was way more morbid than the rest seem to be. A lot of death and double crossing were quite a part of the storyline. I still like what this series is about and will read the next book to see what happens. I am definitely invested in the story. I give this book a 3 out of 5.
