Review: What If by Rebecca Donovan (YA)

Book Blurb

A new novel by the USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Breathing Series . . .

What if you had a second chance to meet someone for the first time?

Cal Logan is shocked to see Nicole Bentley sitting across from him at a coffee shop thousands of miles from their hometown. After all, no one has seen or heard from her since they graduated over a year ago.

Except this girl isn't Nicole.

She looks exactly like Cal's shy childhood crush, but her name is Nyelle Preston and she has no idea who he is. This girl is impulsive and daring, her passion for life infectious. The complete opposite of Nicole. Cal finds himself utterly fascinated-and falling hard. But Nyelle is also extremely secretive. And the closer he comes to finding out what she's hiding, the less he wants to know.

When the secrets from the past and present collide, one thing becomes clear: Nothing is what it seems.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Cal is now in college. When he goes home for a visit he learns that no one has heard from his secret crush Nicole. It appears like she disappeared into thin air. However one night at a Halloween party back at school, Cal witnesses a break-up between a couple. The girl is dressed as a ninja. So he can’t really tell who it is but she amuses him.

As a result Cal escorts the ninja and her friend Tess home from the party that night. In a single moment he sees ninja girl’s eyes and is shocked that this girl may be Nicole. Cal is confused as to why she is here instead of Harvard and why she calls herself Nyelle. She shows no recognition of him whatsoever and Cal is completely confused. He questions his sanity.

He decides to let it go and get to know Nyelle the way she is now. She is spontaneous and full of life. When he finally learns the reasons behind all that has happened, he is shocked. His life will never be the same.

I didn’t know what to expect with this book after reading the description. I actually liked it a lot. I liked the friendship and bond that the characters first developed. It continued throughout high school even though they paired off without really knowing why. Cal and Rae were left in the dark as to what was really going on. It added to the plot as Cal and Rae tried to figure out why Nicole became Nyelle and why their friendships with Nicole and Richelle ended. The reader learned through the memories revealed by the author.

I was able to guess what happened but I like how the author gave clues as to why things were the way they were before the big reveal. You know that Nicole had to have experienced something so traumatic to want to forget herself. The book was an interesting journey that four friends find themselves on. I give it a 4 out of 5.
