Review: Riot (Mayhem #2) by Jamie Shaw (NA)

Book Blurb

When Dee Dawson meets sexy mohawked guitarist Joel Gibbon, she knows it won’t be long before she has him wrapped around her finger. No guy has ever been able to resist her… but Dee’s met her match in a player like Joel.

Dee’s not the relationship type—not after seeing the pain “love” has caused her friends and family—yet she’s desperate to make Joel want her more than anyone else. He quickly becomes an obsession, and when a reckless attempt to make him jealous ends in disaster, Dee turns into the damsel in distress she never wanted to be. With her carefree world crashing down around her, the last thing she needs is Joel’s pity.

But Joel is suddenly determined to prove he cares, and no matter how hard Dee tries to push him away, he refuses to let her shut him out. Now the girl who swore she’d never say those three little words must choose between guarding her heart and losing Joel forever… or falling head-over-heels for the tattooed rock star of her dreams.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Dee can’t get Joel out of her head. He always has his arm around a different girl or girls when she sees him, especially when the band plays. However he seems to go home with her most nights. What they have is not good, but she can’t seem to move on. She refuses to give her heart away and she knows she isn’t able to be in a relationship without hurting someone. So she continues on as usual.

However things start getting to her. All the girls that Joel flirts with make her angry. Her best friends question her feelings and tell her this is not a good relationship as it continues.

Everything changes after Dee is cornered by another member of the band. Joel comes to her rescue that night and refuses to let her drown in self-pity and guilt afterwards. The dynamics of their relationship change and Dee is scared. She is afraid she will hurt him. She is broken.

This book was interesting. I liked the band and Dee’s friends. Dee, on the other hand, was over the top and extremely dramatic. You get the sense of how young she is without the author really saying it.

The first part of the story was about this game that Joel and Dee play with each other. It was actually sad to watch because they are only hurting themselves. Dee really got on my nerves. She refused to listen to anyone even the ones who cared about her most. She seemed determined to self-destruct. It drove me crazy. She apparently had to learn things the hard way. I can’t stand characters like that. They make things harder than they have to be. My disgust of her almost overshadowed my desire to see how the story ended. I did like the ending so I’m glad I powered through it. I give it a 3 out of 5.
