ARC Review: Between Us and the Moon by Rebecca Maizel (YA)

Book Blurb

A luminous young adult novel that evokes Judy Blume’s Forever for a new generation.

Ever since Sarah was born, she’s lived in the shadow of her beautiful older sister, Scarlett. But this summer on Cape Cod, she’s determined to finally grow up. Then she meets gorgeous college boy Andrew. He sees her as the girl she wants to be. A girl who’s older than she is. A girl like Scarlett.

Before she knows what’s happened, one little lie has transformed into something real. And by the end of August, she might have to choose between falling in love, and finding herself.

Fans of Jenny Han and Stephanie Perkins are destined to fall for this story about how life and love are impossible to predict.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Sarah, or Bean, wants to study astronomy. She is tracking Comet Jolie and is very excited. She has been doing it all by hand. She has been working all year and hopes this will win her the big scholarship for school. Nothing can bring her down. Her life is going well.

However one night out of the blue her best friend turned boyfriend, Tucker, breaks up with her. He tells her she is just watching life not really living it. She is devastated, but tries to focus on her work. Nothing else matters, except she isn’t happy.

She decides to do an experiment. She will dress and act like her sister Scarlett because everyone seems to love her. Sarah secretly borrows Scarlett’s clothes and meets new people. She even meets a boy. Andrew is the one who smiled at her the first day from the jeep. He recognizes her and takes an interest. Sarah believes the experiment will be a success.

As time goes on she shares more of herself with Andrew instead of what Scarlett would do. He seems to like who she really is. However Scarlett is coming home and her big party will be held. Andrew and the rest of Scarlett’s friends are coming. He will learn that Sarah lied about who she is.

I really liked this book. I couldn’t put it down. Sarah is smart and sheltered then has her heart broken. She decides to embrace life more resulting where she falls in love. The change in her was really fun to read. She realized more of who she was.

I also like Andrew showing the reader that smart girls were someone a boy could love. This love story was sweet during the book, but the ending was a disappointment for me. I truly wanted a different ending. However the journey was a good one and full of emotion. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. I give it a 4 out of 5.
