Review: Rain (Paper Gods #2) by Amanda Sun (YA)

Book Blurb

American Katie Green has decided to stay in Japan. She's started to build a life in the city of Shizuoka, and she can't imagine leaving behind her friends, her aunt and especially Tomohiro, the guy she's fallen in love with. But her return is not as simple as she thought. She's flunking out of Japanese school and committing cultural faux pas wherever she goes. Tomohiro is also struggling—as a Kami, his connection to the ancient gods of Japan and his power to bring drawings to life have begun to spiral out of control.

When Tomo decides to stop drawing, the ink finds other ways to seep into his life—blackouts, threatening messages and the appearance of unexplained sketches. Unsure how to help Tomo, Katie turns to an unexpected source for help—Jun, her former friend and a Kami with an agenda of his own. But is Jun really the ally he claims to be? In order to save themselves, Katie and Tomohiro must unravel the truth about Tomo's dark ancestry, as well as Katie's, and confront one of the darkest gods in Japanese legend.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Katie decided to stay in Japan with her aunt. She has yet to talk to Tomo. He hasn’t answered her calls or texts. When he sees her at the festival, he is surprised. Katie is not sure where she fits in anymore since he is there with another girl and she hasn’t heard from him. She leaves to find her friends while Tomo chases after her. They reunite to watch the fireworks but are surprised when ink rains from the sky.

Tomo is Kami and his control on his powers is not the best. He is fighting his ink from taking him over. Katie is trying to help him gain control but also learn to live in Japan and sustain the relationship she has with him.

When the ink tries to take control over Tomo, Katie turns to Jun to get information about the Kami. She knows he likes her but her heart belongs to Tomo and she will help him no matter what, even seeking information from his rival.

Tomo fears what his powers will force him to do and he tries to push Katie away to keep her safe but she refuses to go. She is determined to see this through. The ink is getting stronger and Katie is afraid she thinks she knows why. She questions whether Tomo is evil or not. She also wonders if she makes things worse for him.

When Tomo starts losing control Katie and Jun rush to help him. As they face each other shocking revelations come to light. An ageless battle between good and evil continues. Katie fights to stop the battle and keep Tomo’s ink at bay.

This is the second book in the Paper Gods series. The story takes up where the first book, Ink, left off. Katie has decided to stay in Japan and she is determined to embrace the Japanese culture and people. The author really includes a lot of cultural instances where Katie was out of her depth. She had awesome friends that maneuvered her around them.

In this storyline the author also throws in some confusion for Katie. The characters in the first book that she and Tomo fought against become allies. Katie wasn’t sure who she could trust to help Tomo. In the end she is surprised who really turns on her.

The story continues in the next book, Storm. This is an intriguing series unlike anything I’ve ever read before. I like the characters and the plot. I give this book a 4 out of 5.
